THE REGION
MAY WELL BE THE BEST PLACE ON EARTH
Around 80 nautical miles off Padang on the west coast of Sumatra lie the Mentawai Islands, a chain of more than 70 tropical islands spread across 250 kilometres of open Indian Ocean. For surfers, this place sits in a league of its own. Nowhere else packs so many truly world class waves into such a compact stretch of ocean. Since the first explorations in the 1990s, the Mentawai have become a testing ground where surfers come to prove their worth in saltwater. Beyond picture-perfect waves, the islands also hold some of the most beautiful beaches we’ve ever set foot on and a fascinating local culture, including indigenous Mentawai tribes who still live on their own terms, closely connected to the jungle.
THE SURF
AS GOOD AS IT GETS
The Mentawai surf menu is about as good as it gets. Three factors explain why: density, diversity and quality. Few places on Earth pack this many magazine-worthy waves close together, with reefs facing different directions that open multiple options when winds or swell shift. Sitting near the equator, winds are often light and variable rather than locked into strict patterns, which makes experienced surf guides invaluable. Add the islands’ wide exposure to long-period Indian Ocean swells, plus multiple swell magnets scattered around and you get remarkable consistency. Nothing is guaranteed with Mother Nature, but this is about as close as it gets.
