The Resort
PRIVATE ISLAND RETREAT, NOT A RESORT
Togat Nusa is not a camp and it’s not a resort. It’s a real retreat from modern life. Set on a private island in the heart of the Mentawais, it’s built for people who value the ocean, nature, and space. Scarecrows, one of the most consistent and fun waves in the area, breaks right out front, with plenty more options nearby. But this place goes deeper than surf. Hand-crafted structures blend seamlessly into the island, creating a setting that feels raw, well-made, and truly unique. Good food, thoughtful service and great vibes top up the trip. A proper escape for surfers looking to slow down, disconnect, and reconnect with a rare slice of paradise, while scoring some of the best surf in the world.
Accommodation
Set across a 10-hectare private island surrounded by a white sand beach, Togat Nusa hosts just 4 hand-built bungalows for 8 to 10 guests total. Each is uniquely crafted from salvaged hardwoods and driftwood by John E Ocean, blending Mentawai design with decades of island craftsmanship. Bungalow 1 with 2x king beds sits right on a prime swimming beach, another is a secluded honeymoon hideaway tucked in the jungle, the family bungalow offers 3 rooms and flexibility for groups, and the fourth is a smaller beachfront option ideal for couples. All have custom furniture and use fans instead of AC. Barefoot and deeply connected to the island.
THE SURF
OUT FRONT FIRST & PLENTY BEYOND
With Scarecrows, a crown jewel of the area, breaking right out front, the front yard is often the right call. It’s one of the most exposed waves in the area, picking up most pulses and delivering long, rippable walls. On the right days, the optional end section "Curry Bowl" throws open, easy barrels. Beyond, the Central Mentawai offer a full menu for all levels, including Telescopes, Iceland, Suicides, Tikus, 7 Palms and a few earned secrets from two decades on location. Daily guided boat trips to these breaks are included. When conditions line up, missions north to Playgrounds or south to Lances are possible by speedboat, with fuel shared by guests joining.
THE FOOD
WHAT THE ISLAND PROVIDES, TREATED WELL
Food at Togat Nusa is fresh, generous, and made with care. Three meals a day are served, with before-dawn snacks for early surf starts, followed by made-to-order breakfasts and easy buffet lunches and dinners. Local Indonesian cooks mix Western, Hawaiian, Mexican, and Indonesian favourites, using fresh fish, local meats, organic garden produce, and some of the best homemade bread in the islands. Menus rotate between pizzas, curries, burritos, fresh fish, salads, and comfort classics. Some evenings end with the day’s catch cooked over a beach fire at sunset. Special diets are no problem. All served at the new jungle restaurant overlooking the reef and the island’s best swimming beach.
EXPERIENCES
SLOW LIVING
Life at Togat Nusa moves at island pace. Between surfs, days fill naturally with yoga sessions overlooking the ocean, snorkelling clear reefs (and the possibility to help restore these), fishing or spearfishing for dinner, paddling a local canoe, or swimming off empty beaches. There’s space to slow down, stretch, play music, read, or simply do nothing at all. Evenings often end with bonfires, unreal sunsets, and quiet conversations under the stars. Starlink is available in main areas and some bungalows if you need it, but it’s often a good call to switch off for a while.
