The Resort
A REAL RETREAT IN NATURE, DONE WELL
Ngalung Kalla Eco Retreat is set on 250 hectares of oceanfront land on Sumba’s untouched southwest coast. Built in partnership with nature, it offers a rare combination of comfort, space, and a genuine connection to the surroundings. A perfect right-hander in view from almost everywhere at the resort, plus an array of remote waves along the coastline on tap with proper speedboats. You’ll wake up and fall asleep to the sound of reeling waves and spend your days surfing, exploring trails, beaches, gardens and the fascinating local culture. With a yoga space, infinity pool, communal lounge, and beach just steps away, this is a place for water people, explorers, and anyone looking to slow things down.
Accommodation
The retreat features six open-air bamboo bungalows built with stone, hardwood and thatch. Each one has a spacious bed with mosquito net, a hot and cold outdoor shower, and a composting toilet with ocean or jungle views. The woodwork in the traditional Umas is actually mindblowing. Interiors are simple, spacious and comfortable, with solar lighting and cooling sea breezes doing most of the work. A shared lounge and library offer space to read, chat or simply slow down, while the 24-metre saltwater infinity pool is reached via a cable bridge suspended above the forest canopy. Every corner of the retreat feels considered, functional, and an excuse to daydream.

THE SURF
PERFECT RIGHT-HANDER TEASING ALL DAY
Pinnacles, an incredibly fun right-hander just below the retreat, is probably the main reason you come here. She has many moods depending on the swell, but the pocket is always spicy. With size, she delivers serious barrels. Medium swells are perfect for turns, while smaller days are playful and user-friendly. The resort's dinghies make getting in and out easy, while proper speedboats unlock a variety of remote waves along this wild stretch of coast. There are plenty more quality rights to explore, plus a handful of lefts, with options for all levels. Surf guiding is included, with the team tracking tides, swell and wind to help you make the most of every session.
DINING
ACTUAL GARDEN & SEA-TO-TABLE
Meals are served in the central open-air restaurant at long mahogany tables where guests have the option to come together and share stories. Menus are mostly vegetarian and pescatarian, with produce grown in the onsite permaculture gardens and seafood often speared by your host or sourced fresh from local fishermen. The menu is creative and constantly evolving, shaped by what is growing, what is in season and what is available that day. Dietary requirements are happily accommodated, and private dining can be arranged on request.
EXPERIENCES
RICH IN MANY OTHER WAYS
Whether you want to move, rest or explore, Ngalung Kalla offers a wide range of experiences. For the curious, there are nature walks, shelling trips, birdwatching, snorkelling, incredible beaches, and some seriously good spearfishing and fishing grounds. Mountain e-bikes open more options to cruise and explore, while visits to nearby weaving villages and local markets offer a glimpse into Sumba's rich culture.
