The Resort
Earth-Conscious Tropical Escape
Ngalung Kalla Eco Retreat is set on 250 hectares of oceanfront land on Sumba’s untouched southwest coast. Designed in harmony with the land, the retreat blends barefoot comfort with thoughtful simplicity. The standout feature is the perfect right-hander in view from almost everywhere at the resort, not to mention the other remote waves all along this coast which are reachable by speedboat. You’ll wake up to birdsong, fall asleep to the sound of waves, and spend your days surfing, exploring trails, beaches, and gardens. With a yoga space, infinity pool, communal lounge, and beach just steps away, Ngalung Kalla is a sanctuary for surfers, adventurers, and nature-lovers alike.
Accommodation
The retreat features six open-air bamboo bungalows built with stone, hardwood, and thatch. Each one has a spacious bed with mosquito net, a hot and cold outdoor shower, and a composting toilet with ocean or jungle views. Interiors are simple and elegant, with solar lighting and cooling sea breezes. A shared lounge and library offer space to read or chat, and the 24-metre saltwater infinity pool is reached by a cable bridge that stretches above the forest canopy. Every corner of the retreat is designed to be both functional and in balance with the land.
VILLAS / UMAS
THE SURF
Right‑Hand Perfection at Your Door
A peeling right-hander breaks in the bay just in front of the retreat. On small days, it is ideal for beginners. When the swell fills in, it becomes a fast, hollow wave suited to confident surfers. The retreat’s dinghies make surf access easy and flexible, while a 12-metre speedboat allows for longer missions to outer breaks when conditions align. Nearby are lefts and rights, reef and beach setups, catering to all surf levels. Surf guiding is included, with the team always tracking tides, swell and wind to help you make the most of each session.
DINING
Garden-to-Table Sumba Style
Meals are served in the central open-air restaurant at long mahogany tables where guests come together to eat under the stars. The food is fresh, wholesome and flavourful. Menus are mostly vegetarian, with seafood caught nearby and produce grown in the onsite permaculture gardens. From early morning snacks to sunset dinners, the kitchen team prepares dishes with care and creativity. Dietary preferences are welcome, and private dining can be arranged on request. Expect nourishing food that reflects the retreat’s sustainable ethos.
EXPERIENCES
Reconnect with Earth & Ocean
Whether you want to move, rest or explore, Ngalung Kalla offers a wide range of experiences. Daily yoga, full-body massages, and quiet time by the pool or beach provide calm and balance. For the curious, there are nature walks, shelling trips, snorkelling, and birdwatching. Mountain bikes are available for coastal trails, and cultural visits to nearby weaving villages or markets offer insight into Sumba’s heritage. Longer surf missions, diving, kitesurfing and waterfall tours are available on request. The retreat’s team helps tailor each day to your energy and interests.
